[Daniel Norman] Hey welcome to “Liberty in EDC” we are here with our Sheriff John D'Agostini from the great county of El Dorado, so we are going to be talking with him about who he is and the sheriff's department and some of our current events going on right now, so Hi John, thanks for coming in!
[John D’Agostini] Thanks for having me.
[Daniel Norman] So first thing is who is John?
[John D’Agostini] Who am I?
[Daniel Norman] Your families been in the county for a long time right?
[John D’Agostini] Yeah, so I'm fourth generation born and raised here. My great grandparents came and settled in South County in 1924. Done everything on the ranch from raising produce and livestock to I grew up raising turkeys.
[Daniel Norman] Oh yeah ...?
[John D’Agostini] We raised the 50,000 birds a year, 2 broods of 25,000.
[Daniel Norman] Oh Wow! Growing up we had a small farm out in Swansboro here, I mean, El Dorado County people might know where Swansboro is but yeah
[John D’Agostini] We know where it is.
[Daniel Norman] but yeah it's a small farm we do like two Turkey's.
[John D’Agostini] Yeah, we raised commercially so but then we got to be we were too small we were going to expand but we couldn’t get a long enough contract and make it worth the investment so that was right about the time I was just getting out of high school and already started a little bit in construction so then I went full time into construction did that and finished my time doing that as a general contractor building homes mostly in El Dorado County with other contractors?
[Daniel Norman] Is there any homes in County that you're particularly proud of ? Like, “Yeah I built that place”
[John D’Agostini] You know what? I’ll be honest with you most of the homes that I built were very modest homes between 2,024 square feet and than a family and a young family could afford. That was….I really enjoyed that. The joke was I built a lot with Tom Fenileton construction at the time ...the joke was “What are we building this time and he said the same thing just a little different”, so they weren’t tranks, but then me and a couple of the guys Danny Real and he was here and um, they were just nice. It was neat to see a young family come in and be able to enjoy it something and raise a family in that you did, so I'm proud of all of them.
[Daniel Norman] Thats great!
[John D’Agostini] I built one giant mansion down in Folsom in The Street of Dreams” American River Canyon North and it turned out nice and it was a neat project and I said I did it, but I prefered the little ones.
[Daniel Norman] So what was after construction?
[John D’Agostini] Law Enforcement. I started at night, put myself through an Academy in 93, graduated the Academy as a reserve deputy sheriff for Amador County and then I worked there the sheriff's office for 8 or 9 years and then I went to the district attorney's office in Amador County and worked as the DA investigator .
[Daniel Norman] So were you on Patrol in Amador County?
[John D’Agostini] At the Sheriffs office? Yup,started in patrol like everybody else, at that time was a field training officer got into investigations. I was the Chief Deputy Coroner and then my Passion back then was to book narcotics ,so I finally got into the narcotics and worked that for quite some time, then promoted to Sergeant and went back on the street from literally like 6 months and then went back in and ran as the narcotic unit at the Sheriff's Office.
[Daniel Norman] And this is all Amador?
[John D’Agostini” In Amador, and then over at the DA’s office I was assigned a General Criminal, so I did everything from bad checks to homicides and then they started the New State Task Force over there called (ACCNET) in 2007 and they asked if I would go in given my experience working narcotics in Amador County and if I would go in and help get it started.
[Daniel Norman] Now what's (ACCNET)?
[John D’Agostini] It’s the Amador County Combined Narcotics Enforcement Team” So it was just supposed to be just a 6 month assignment to help get going, get it off its feet, get it’s policies and procedures all set up that processes all in line and the team team of established, but I ended up doing that until the day that I was sworn in here at the Sheriffs
